Robert C. Kettler, Founder, Chairman & CEO
Robert Kettler is founder, CEO, and majority shareholder of Kettler, one of the largest diversified Real Estate development companies in the Washington, DC region. Kettler is currently ranked in the top 30 private companies in Washington, DC by the Washington Post.
Founded in 1977, Kettler develops planned communities, apartments, condominiums, and mixed-use projects. Kettler Management Company, an affiliate of Kettler manages over 13,000 apartments in 55 communities and over 1.7million square feet of office and retail space. Kettler Management has been actively expanding their third-party management business over the last two years by adding 4,012 apartments owned by third parties. Recently, Kettler Management has recently expanded into the New York market and is managing two new Class A apartment properties in suburban New Jersey owned by Trammel Crow. Kettler Management was the NAHB 2008 National Property Management Company of the Year.
Kettler has developed 25 planned communities and over 46,000 homes . Project examples include the 6050 home community of Cascades in Loudoun County, Virginia., the 2,434 home community of Piedmont in Prince William County, Virginia, and Lorton Station (and adjacent projects) a 2600 unit redevelopment of the Lorton Penitentiary and Lorton rail yards in Fairfax County, Virginia. Kettler communities are known for their land planning creativity and excellence, extraordinary amenities (like designer golf courses by Tom Fazio and Jack Nicklaus), walkable diversified housing, mixed-use elements, transportation improvements and access to mass transit. Mr. Kettler was the NAHB 1986 Developer of the Year and received the BIA Monument Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
Kettler has developed 15,405 apartments and condominiums in 65 projects. Currently under development are the 5 building 1,000 unit Midtown and Metropolitan hi-rise projects at Reston Town Center and the 3,212 unit 8 building hi-rise Metropolitan Park in Pentagon City designed and planned by Robert A. M. Stern. Kettler is also the largest developer of affordable housing in the Washington, D.C. region with a portfolio that includes 6,512 bond financed apartments that it owns and manages in 33 projects. As an apartment developer, Kettler has ranked in the top 20 multifamily development companies by volume in the United States every year over the last 10 years and has a current development pipeline of over 4,200 units. Kettler’s 5 active condominium communities are currently among the top selling projects in the Washington Metro region.
Kettler has developed over 5 million SF of mixed-use commercial real estate. Active projects include the 1.2 million SF Trinity Centre mixed-use office park in Fairfax County, Virginia and the 1.2 million SF Villages at Leesburg town center project currently under construction in Loudoun County, Virginia. Kettler has an inventory of commercial land zoned and planned for an additional 4.3 million SF of development throughout the region.
Mr. Kettler has served on several Academic Boards including advisory boards at George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College. Mr. Kettler was a Trustee of the St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School in Washington, D.C. for 5 years and at the Potomac School in McLean, Virginia for 6 years. Mr. Kettler and his wife Charlotte have been co-chairs from 2003 until the present of a successful 50 million dollar capital campaign that has led to a transformational redevelopment of the Potomac School. Mr. Kettler has also served on the Board of the National Methodist Church and a variety of corporate boards.
The Kettler’s have 4 children and live in McLean, Virginia.
