KSI Services Named 2006 ‘Owner of the Year’ by McGraw Hill Publication

Mid-Atlantic Construction Magazine Celebrates Achievements of Visionary Developer and Company

KSI Services, Inc., one of the country’s top real estate developers and the largest land developer in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, was named ‘Owner of the Year’ by Mid-Atlantic Construction Magazine, a McGraw Hill regional construction publication.

The magazine cited Robert C. Kettler, founder of KSI, and his company for having the vision to see the changing landscape of the region and emerge as the developer behind the mixed-use projects and vertical planned communities defining today's metropolitan area landscape. Working in the Washington-Baltimore market, KSI Services Inc. has benefited from the on-going growth in the region. In the late 1990’s they began a systematic acquisition of property near multimodal transportation hubs including Metro, Virginia Railway Express and major highway interchanges.  They also defined the term ‘vertical communities’ by creating and building large, high-density buildings with all the amenities of traditional planned communities.

Founded in 1977, by Robert C. Kettler, a third-generation builder and developer, Vienna, Virginia-based KSI is responsible for creating residential, commercial and retail projects as well as significant mixed-use spaces. By partnering with nationally renowned architects and land-planners, such as Robert A. M. Stern, HOK, Cesar Pelli and Sasaki, KSI is known for bold and innovative designs. Today, the nearly thirty-year-old company is one of the nation’s top 20 developers of multifamily housing with 2,500 condominiums under development and ownership of nearly 9,000 apartment units.

Under Kettler’s leadership; KSI has become the 14th largest privately owned company in the Washington region, with more than 400 employees.   The company’s 2005 revenues were a record $800 million and KSI is currently developing eight of the 11 largest residential projects in the DC metro region.

“I am accepting this honor on behalf of my employees,” stated Kettler. “It is good to be recognized by one’s peers, but it is even better to work with the professionals at KSI.  “I am especially pleased, because we are in competition with other developers from Philadelphia to Richmond who are competing in the hottest market in the country. This kind of recognition confirms we are on the right track.”

In discussing the future of the market in the region, Kettler noted that the Washington area and its suburbs are becoming more integrated as transportation infrastructure becomes more networked. “For example,” Kettler said, “Leesburg and Fredericksburg are not only commuter-oriented, but have become employment centers themselves. Furthermore, while Washington and Baltimore are still unique, they are now more part of an integrated region.”
